Vyon® Porous Plastic Materials

Vyon® sintered particle porous materials are manufactured from virgin grade polymers which are covered by EU and US food and pharmaceutical regulatory requirements. Using unique manufacturing conditions, we have developed our core material in response to industry demands for higher technical specifications and physical-chemical properties. The many interconnected, yet tortuous, pathways of our Vyon® materials makes them ideal in many varied and industry spanning applications.

Our lightweight and versatile Vyon®  porous plastics are available in a variety of different thermoplastic base materials. At Porvair Sciences we have the expertise to create Vyon®  materials to tight customer specifications, controlled pore sizes and to the highest of quality standards. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Vyon® is a strong, highly dense porous plastic base material manufactured to exhibit high mechanical strength properties, good chemical resistance and low levels of leachables.

Ideal for: SPE Frits, Process Chromatography, Battery Vents, Vacuum Table Covers



Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Vyon® is a dense polyethylene with significantly higher molecular weight when compared to HDPE. Vyon® products, manufactured from UHMWPE have excellent tensile strength, superior chemical resistance and a smooth surface finish.

Ideal for: Sterile Vents, Inhalation Devices, Pipette Tip Filters, Diagnostic Wicks




Polypropylene (PP), while similar to polyethylene materials in mechanical strength and chemical resistance, PP is a tougher porous plastic with higher temperature resistance. Vyon® manufactured from PP is mainly used in industrial applications where both its superior hardness and thermal properties are desirable.

Vyon® composite is a unique blend of our base porous plastics and additives or materials of interest such as carbon black. In addition, Porvair Sciences offers customers the ability to develop ‘clever’ composites. These are blends containing chemically active agents immobilised within the Vyon® structure. Popular composites include CMC powders, SPE resins and controlled pore glass (CPG). Products and applications using clever composites offers unique advantages in pore size and controlled flow over the traditional loosely packed systems.
