Main purpose of job role:

Porvair Sciences Limited (PSL) are global leaders in the manufacturing and development of cutting-edge porous plastics technologies. We specialise in the filtration and separation of materials for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life science industries.

PSL need to recruit an individual who can support material science product development team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing our Vyon® product range and improving our capabilities as an international leader in the development and supply of high performance, innovative materials for applications in filtration and separation.

The work involved will require, an analytical mind, excellent attention to detail and good experimental planning.

The individual would need to be self-motivated and be able to plan their work, carry it out reliably and in a timely manner. In addition, they would need to have good communication and reporting skills and an enthusiastic approach to their work.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Business and Technical Development Manager

  • Managing material science projects
  • Research of new innovative materials required for new product development
  • Product and process development, including concept creation, materials sourcing, testing and integration through to manufacturing.
  • Analysis of resins, and composites to determine failure modes and understand performance
  • Conduct material data analysis on polymers and resins and routine materials testing and investigations
  • Lead and perform analytical and mechanical testing analysis for polymers, validating theory through simulation & processing trials
  • Ensure compliance with quality policies, cGMP, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication and training
  • Responsible for material characterisation including porosimetry and porometry
  • Assisting in the general maintenance and calibration of instruments and laboratory equipment
  • Quality control
  • Application testing of new products
  • Writing protocols, SOP’s and application notes for any new processes as necessary
  • Presenting and reporting on progress and outcomes to the wider development and management team
  • Supplying necessary support for the technical, manufacturing and sales and marketing team.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Primary degree in a scientific discipline, ideally Material Science and Engineering but others will be considered.
  • Computer literacy (familiarity with Microsoft Office as a minimum).

 

Desirable Qualifications:     

  • High quality secondary degree or PhD in Material Science, Engineering or a closely related subject
  • Experience of any of the following would be advantageous: Porometry, porosimetry, SPC, statistics, and mechanical testing.
  • Knowledge and experience in a relevant engineering/materials field, with evidence of existing competencies in materials science, both theory and practical

Accountable For:

  • Managing material science related development projects
  • Writing up reports and protocols of material testing
  • Day to day measurement of materials
  • Supporting the material technical team in new product development

Experience Required:

  • Strong background in Material Science and Engineering with strong academic qualifications in these fields.
  • Understanding of polymer chemistry and processing fundamentals with experience of materials analysis.
  • A good track record in problem solving and technical communication
  • Experience of working in a manufacturing and/or laboratory environment

  • Commercially minded attitude, ability to bring ideas to life
  • Proactive and driven to achieve goals. Self-starting and self-motivational qualities.
  • Ability to get on well with colleagues in a small team
